The Early Royal Society and the Critique by the Global South
The talk is a follow up on a presentation by Prof. Anstey at the conference in Nancy « Démesure ou sobriété ? Nouvelles approches de la conception moderne de la nature » (New approaches to the modern conception of nature. On Bacon's Sylva Sylvarum). Abstract / resumé
Indigenous scholars from the Global South have attacked Francis Bacon’s vision for the advancement of knowledge and the way that this was taken up by his heirs in the early Royal Society. They claim that talk of the ‘discovery’ of the ‘new world’ is condescending and that conquest and epistemic and cultural superiority were the hallmarks of the Baconian project. This paper, while not denying excesses and failings amongst the fellows of the early Royal Society, goes some way in defending them against these charges. It examines the notions of discovery, conquest, and superiority in their writings and as features of their intellectual milieu.
